We reached the tiny Caribbean island of Marie Galante via a short boat ride from Pointe-à-Pitre in Guadeloupe, a beautiful lush green island with lonely white-sand beaches and electric turquoise waters. It’s a quiet, off the radar destination with a slow paced, laid-back lifestyle, the ideal tropical getaway for those who want to disconnect and relax.
Exploring Marie Galante, we traveled slow winding roads through rolling hills of sugar cane, visiting exceptional boutique rum distilleries and solitary beaches in every corner of the island. The rum produced in Marie Galante is said to be the best in the world. The island has three functioning distilleries, Rhum Bielle and Habitation Bellevue stand out as our favorites, and is littered with picturesque 19th century plantation ruins that testify to its sugarcane past.
On the west coast north of Saint Louis, lovely beaches can be found at Anse Canot and Vieux Fort. On the east coast, Anse Taliseronde offers an adventurous hike, a beautiful reef, and quiet natural surroundings. South of the town of Capesterre you’ll also find a long stretch of beaches including Petite Anse, all offer beautiful white sand and clear water.
